How long does it take to identify that a security incident is occurring? Industry averages for dwell time—the period between initial compromise and detection—often exceed 200 days. Organizations that can detect intrusions in hours rather than months have fundamentally different risk profiles.
Mean Time to Respond (MTTR)
Once an incident is detected, how quickly can the organization contain it? This measures the effectiveness of incident response processes, the availability of responders, and the preparedness of playbooks and tooling. Faster response means smaller blast radius.

"How does failure emerge quietly over time?" Mean time metrics reveal how quickly the organization notices when something goes wrong. Long detection times indicate that failures can compound silently for months before anyone realizes. This is where catastrophic breaches come from.

Not all assets are created equal, and not all controls are deployed uniformly. Coverage metrics reveal gaps in protection that aggregate statistics might hide.

What percentage of your most critical assets have your baseline security controls deployed and functioning? Most organizations discover significant gaps when they actually inventory their crown jewels and verify protection. A 95% deployment rate for endpoint protection sounds good until you realize the unprotected 5% includes your domain controllers.

What does your organization look like from the outside? Track the number and severity of internet-exposed assets, especially those that are unauthorized or unknown to the security team. Shadow IT and forgotten test systems often become entry points for attackers.
